At Evolve Africa Initiative, we are committed to empowering young minds and building a brighter future for our communities. It was in light of this, that on Saturday, 15th March, 2025, our team embarked on a sensitization mission to Dong Community in Plateau State, where we engaged with the vibrant youths of the area.
Our discussion centered around the dangers of drug abuse which is a well-known menace that threatens to undermine the very fabric of our society. We emphasized how drug abuse affects the minds of our youths, who are supposed to be the future leaders and change-makers.
It’s alarming to see how substance abuse can darken the brightness of young lives, leading to a downward spiral of destruction and despair.As we interacted with these youths, it became clear that many of them were unaware of the devastating consequences of drug abuse.
Some were aware and are yearning for a way out of the hole of addiction. They were eager to learn, to listen, and to be guided towards a better path. And that’s exactly what we are committed to providing: guidance, support, and empowerment.
Next, we spoke to them about Business and Financial literacy. In today’s fast-paced and ever-changing economic landscape, having multiple streams of income is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. We encouraged the youths to explore various handworks and entrepreneurial ventures, even if they already have a stable source of income.
By doing so, they can not only supplement their earnings but also develop a safety net to fall back on during uncertain times. We stressed that financial literacy is a vital life skill, one that can empower them to make informed decisions about their financial futures.
We also stressed the importance of being proactive and taking control of their financial lives. We encouraged them to start saving, investing, and budgeting, no matter how small the amount. By cultivating good financial habits from this youthful age, they can set themselves up for long-term financial stability and success.
As we continued our engagement with the youths of Dong Community, we also took the opportunity to enlighten them on the importance of Community Development Planning. We emphasized that community development is a collective responsibility, and that everyone has a role to play in shaping the future of their community.
We explained that a community development plan is a roadmap that outlines the community’s vision, goals, and objectives. It’s a document that identifies the community’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and outlines strategies for addressing these challenges.
We encouraged the youths to take ownership of their community’s development plan, and to contribute their ideas and perspectives. We stressed that community development is not just about physical infrastructure, but also about social and economic empowerment.
As we discussed the community development plan, it became clear that the youths of Dong Community are eager to make a positive impact. They are passionate about improving their community, and they are willing to work hard to achieve their goals.
However, we also recognized that the community faces significant challenges, including limited access to resources, infrastructure, and funding.
