Rufina Nyelong, Executive Director of Evolve Africa Initiative, recently attended the World Bank project titled Advancing Gender Responsive Procurement (GRP) in Nigeria which was held in Abuja. As a seasoned advocate for women’s empowerment and development with over two decades of experience, Rufina Nyelong brought valuable perspectives and insights to the discussion. Her goal is to create a positive impact in the lives of women and her involvement in the GRP project aligns with this mission.

The GRP project aims to promote gender equality in public procurement, addressing the existing disparities in Nigeria’s procurement practices. Her participation along with other women as panelists signify the importance of involving women in decision-making processes, particularly in areas that affect their economic empowerment. The discussion centered around strategies to increase women’s participation in public procurement, address barriers to their involvement, and promote sustainable development.
As a champion of women’s empowerment, Rufina Nyelong contributions to the discussion focused on creating opportunities for women-owned businesses to access public procurement contracts. Her expertise helped identify solutions to address the existing gaps in Nigeria’s procurement laws and policies, ensuring that they are more inclusive and supportive of women’s economic empowerment. She shared with her fellow panelists and the audience about Evolve Africa Initiative’s Women Farmers Cooperative where she creates awareness of GRP to the women farmers.
The need of this sensitization is important because the GRP project is crucial in the Nigerian context where women face significant challenges in accessing economic opportunities. Therefore, by promoting gender-responsive procurement practices, the project can go a long way in reducing poverty, improving child health and education, and supporting national socioeconomic development.
This is Evolve Africa Initiative’s vision. This is Rufina Nyelong’s mission and through her work, she has demonstrated her commitment to promoting women’s empowerment and development. Her participation in the GRP project in March is yet another manifestation of her dedication to creating positive change in the lives of women. By sharing her expertise and experience, Nyelong is helping to shape a more inclusive and equitable society, where women have equal opportunities to participate and contribute.
The GRP project is indeed a significant step towards promoting gender equality in Nigeria’s public procurement practices. With our Executive Director’s involvement, the project is likely to have a lasting impact on the lives of women in Africa. For she will see to the successful implementation of it as she does the rest of EAI’s projects. Her goal is to support women economic empowerment and promote sustainable development.

As an advocate of women’s rights, Rufina Nyelong’s efforts will continue to inspire and empower women towards transformative change in Nigeria and beyond.
